Puffs & Stuff

Geometry Level pending

Monica usually keeps her hair tied back into two giant, perfectly spherical afro puffs each with a diameter of 6 inches. Today, she lost one of her elastics, so she consolidates what would be two puffs into one larger puff. What is the diameter of her new, bigger puff in inches?

The answer is 7.56.

Each of Monica's puffs has a radius of 3 inches, so she has 2 × π × 3 i n × 3 i n = 72 π i n 3 2 \times \pi \times 3 in \times 3 in = 72\pi in^{3} of hair. Solving for the radius of a sphere with a volume of 72 in3 gives us a radius of 3.78 inches. So, just enter 3.78 inches and get the question wrong , because we need the diameter of Monica's large puff. This would be 3.78 i n × 2 = 7.56 i n 3.78 in \times 2 = \boxed{7.56 in} .
