3 letter words:
Correctly: c points
Wrongly: o points
4 letter words:
Correctly: 2c points
Wrongly: 2o points
...
John spells 9 and 7 letter words correctly and 6 letter words wrongly. While Jessie spells 6 and 9 letter words correctly and 3 and 8 letter words wrongly. If c points is a positive number and o points is a negative number, who's points is more than the other player after 1 hour?

The free points don't matter since they both got them by default at the same rate.
John : (9-2)c + (7-2)c + (6-2)o
= 12c + 4o
Jessie : (6-2)c + (9-2)c + (3-2)o + (8-2)o
= 11c + 7o
John's positive points exceeded Jessie's with 12 > 11 while his negative points is less than hers with 4 < 7. John wins.
