Race Between Passenger And Goods Train

Algebra Level 2

A passenger train covers the distance between Agra and Tundla, 50 minutes faster than a goods train. Find the distance (in km) between the two stations if the average speed of the passenger train is 60 kmph and that of goods train is 20 kmph.

Suppose the distance between the cities is x Km. then x/20 = x/60 + 50/60 ( to convert minutes into Hours ) Upon simplifying the above equation we get 2x/60 = 50/60.. Hence 2x = 50. And Hence x = 25.

distance travel by train=distance travel by good train 60 x=20 [x+(50/60)] ,x=time in hr 60x=20x+1000 40x=1000 x=25 distance between agra & tundla=60 x=60 (5/6)=50km

(60 x)/20 - (60 x)/60 = 50 .... from here we get x = 25

Let the distance be D (in km) Time taken by the passenger train T1=Distance/Speed=D/60 hours Time taken by goods train T2=D/20 hours The time difference(T1-T2) is 50 minutes= 50/60 hours or, D/20-D/60=50/60 or, 3D/60-D/60 = 50/60 or, 3D - D = 50 or, 2D = 50 or, D = 25

suppose distance=x, and passenger train reached in t hr. so ,goods train will reach in t+5/6 hr. thus,60t=(t+5/6) 20, solving this equation,t=5/12 so distance x= 60 5/12=25

Equation: 60(50-x)=20(50+x) ---> 3000-60x=1000+20x ---> 3000-1000-60x-20x=0 ---> 2000-80x=0 ---> 2000=80x ---> 2000/80=80x/80 ---> 25=x.

Let x x be the goods train's time in hours, therefore, x 5 6 x-\frac {5}{6} is the time of the passenger train to reach the destination. Goods train's speed is 20km/h while passenger train is 60km/h. The distance of both trains are equal, therefore:

20 x = 60 ( x 5 6 ) 20x=60(x-\frac {5}{6})

20 x = 60 x 50 20x=60x-50

40 x = 50 40x=50

x = 1.25 x=1.25

To get the distance between the 2 stations, we need to multiply speed and time.

1.25 × 20 = 25 k m 1.25 \times 20=25km

Let the distance between the cities is x Km. then x/20 = x/60 + 50/60 we get 2x/60 = 50/60 Hence 2x = 50. And Hence x = 25
