Using the identity ( a + b ) ( a − b ) \Large ( a+b)( a-b) = a 2 − b 2 \Large a^{2} - b ^{2} , we obtain 1 \Large 1 - ( 2 ) 2 \Large \sqrt (2)^{2} = − 1 \Large -1
