Racing and Refueling

Algebra Level 2

You have the choice between two race cars for a 100 mile race. Both of the cars have a gas tank that can go 21 miles. The first car takes 30 seconds to refuel and goes 185 miles per hour. The second car takes 90 seconds to refuel but goes 200 miles per hour. Which car should you choose to do the 100 mile race faster?

Each car starts with a full tank of fuel.
Do not include acceleration speeds.
When the car isn't refueling, it goes its set speed.

There is not enough information to tell The first car The second car They will finish at the same time

both car will need 4 times refuelling ,not 5 times . As firstly both car are full intake … and it need to go 100mile , not 105mile … so it can complete race by taking 4 times refuel . for 1st car 100 mile -> 1945.945 s refuel time ->120s total time ->2065.945s for 2nd car 100 mile -> 1800s refuel time -> 360s total time -> 2160s As … 2065.945s < 2160s so .. i 1st car will be reach first

total 4 refuel time 1st car takes 1 × 100 185 × 60 + 30 × 4 60 = 34.43 m i n \frac{1\times 100}{185}\times 60+\frac{30\times 4}{60}=34.43 min 2ndcar takes 1 × 100 200 × 60 + 90 × 4 60 = 36 m i n \frac{1\times 100}{200}\times 60+\frac{90\times 4}{60}=36 min so choose 1st car

it's sound logic, that's what i did to solve the probleme, but in reality it's not true because we still don't know how much take the car to reach 185 mile/h ?.

I think there is no enough information . The phrase "ONE OF THEM" doesn't define the exact car that it modifies, if it is CAR A or CAR B . So , I suggest that the question should contain enough information because even just a 3 word phrase can change how a person think. I guess everything will be allright.

In the enunciation, nowhere can we find an "order" to classify the cars other than this one, which is implied that the car mentioned first is the first and the one mentioned last is the second, purely logical line of thought.

João Arruda - 7 years, 2 months ago

both cars need to refuel 4 times => the first car will spend 30 4/60=2 min and the second will spend 90 4/60=6 min. For 100 miles, the first car need 100/185 60=32.43 min, the second need 100/200 60=30 min. So total time of the first is 32.43+2=34.43 min, and total time of the secon is 30+6= 36. The conclution is the first will run faster for 100 miles race

But the amount of time it takes for the car to travel the distance the 21 miles before refuelling is different therefore you cannot base your answer just on the time spent on refueling

The two cars needed 4 times to refuel since in 100 miles, every 21 miles, it refuels. The first car takes (100km/185kph=0.54 hours=1946sec) + (30s 4)=2066sec while the second one takes (100km/200kph=0.50 hours=1800sec) + (90s 4)=2160sec.

Therefore, the first car wins...

Kayvin Karl Gawat - 7 years, 2 months ago

both cars will have to stop 4 times to refuel since 21*4=84 which is closest to 100 then they'll both go for 16 miles more without stopping.

1st car takes 30/3600 hrs to refuel, 2nd car takes 90/3600 hrs. to refuel

therefore time taken by 1st car=(21/185+30/3600) 4 + 16/185=0.57sec time taken by FASTER car=(21/200+90/3600) 4 + 16/200=0.6sec

therefore, first car is better!!!!

1st car is the answer

Solution:

Given: Distance: 100 miles Refueling Distance: 21 miles C1 velocity: 185mph c2 velocity: 200mph c1 refueling time: 30sec = 0.008333hr c2 refueling time: 90sec = 0.025hr

refueling rate of both car: 100miles/21 miles = 4.76times

Time when the C1 will be out of fuel + refueling time: t= (d/v)+.008333hr t1 = (21m/185mph)+0.008333hr = 0.121851hr

Time when the C2 will be out of fuel + refueling time: t= (d/v)+.0.025hr t2 = (21m/200mph)+0.025hr = 0.13hr

Total time: T = refeuling rate x t TC1 = 4.76 x 0.121851hr TC1 = 0.58Hr.

TC2 = 4.76 x 0.13hr TC2 = 0.62Hr.

Car one (C1) is faster.... :-)

Race length =100 miles. Fuel tank capacity=21 miles. Refueling 100/21 =4.76 times . 4.76 30 =142.8 sec for 1st car. 4.76 90 = 428.9 sec for 2 nd car. speed.. (100/185) 3600= 1945 sec first car. (100/200) 3600=1800 sec 2nd car. Time required for 1st car =1945 sec+142.8 sec. Time required for 2nd car=1800 sec+428.9 sec. Answer is first car as 2087.8 sec < 2228 sec .

100 MILES CAN BE DIVIDED AS (21 4)+16 MILES, TIME TAKEN BY FIRST CAR = ((((21 4)+16/185) 3600)-(30 4)) SECONDS SIMILARLY U CAN FIND TIME TAKEN BY SECOND CAR

1st car.now,1st car goes first 21 miles in 408 seconds.then 1st car takes 30 seconds for refueling.on the other hand 2nd car goes first 21 miles in 378 seconds, then takes 90 seconds for refueling.for this reason, for the first 21 miles the 1st car gets 30 seconds more.for the rest of the race 1st car will get 30 seconds in every refueling time.as a result 1st car finish the race at 2063.351351 seconds.whether the 2nd car will finish the race at 2160 seconds. So we should choose the 1st car.

Total Distance(100)/Vehicle's travel cap(21) = 4.76 , 4 times refueling required for the 100 mile race.

1st vehicle calculations 185mi/hr or 3.08mi/sec when converted to seconds using Time = Distance/Speed formula to get the amount of time for 21 miles: 21mi/(3.08mi/sec) = 6.818sec, multiplied by 4.76 which is the number of 21mi in 100mi = 32.454 seconds & 120 seconds for refueling time. 1st car takes 152.454 seconds to refuel and finish the 100 miles race.

2nd vehicle calculations 200mi/hr or 3.33mi/sec when converted to seconds using Time = Distance/Speed formula to get the amount of time for 21 miles: 21mi/(3.33mi/sec) = 6.306sec, multiplied by 4.76 which is the number of 21mi in 100mi = 30.018 seconds & 360 seconds for refueling time. 2nd car takes 390.018 seconds to refuel and finish the 100 miles race.

1st car finishes the race first!

While refuelling 1st car for 90 seconds same as 2nd car it gets185 * 30 *3/3600 =4.625miles back while the 2nd car gets 200 * 90/3600=5 miles back. So first car takes less time

1st car because if the first car 30 seconds you can refuel the car and it goes for 185 miles but as of the 2nd car it takes 90 much longer than the 1st car, and of the given it goes for 200 miles so even if you just analize the given and what it ask for that should be the answer, but thats only mine,....

If there is no refueling, Car 1 needs 0.540 hours to cover a 100 mi distance while Car 2 needs 0.5 hours. But both cars need refueling 4 times so Car 1 needs 0.033 hour more while Car 2 needs 0.1 hr more to cover the distance. Therefore, Car 1 will race ahead because it will take lesser time.

CAR A; 185mile/60mins x 100mile/race = 32 mins 26 sec + (4refuel x 0,5 min) = 34 mins 26 sec CAR B; 200mile/60mins x 100mile/race = 30 mins + (4refuel x 1.5 min) = 36 mins

Car A would take 34 mins 26 sec to reach 100 miles in speed of 185mph w/ refueling time of 30 seconds. While;

Car B would take 36 Minutes to reach 100 miles in speed of 200mph w/ refueling time of 90 seconds.

so Car A will reach the Finish line 1 minute and 34 seconds a head by Car B..

find time at car A and car B. At car A 100/21 = 4.7619 whole number only. 4 times need to refuel the car. given the time required to refuel. so t1 = 4x30sec = 120 sec calculate t2 with the given velocity and distance. so (100M/185mph)x(60sec/1hr)= 32.4324sec. total time at Car A is T = t1 + t2= 120sec + 32,4324sec = 152.4324sec.

At car B 100/21 = 4.7619. 4 times need to refuel the car. t1 = 4x90sec = 360sec. t2 = (100M/200mph)x(60sec/1hr) = 30 sec. T = t1 + t2 = 360sec + 30sec = 390sec.

CAR A is fastest.

Both car will have to refuel 4 times and as it takes only 30 sec for the first car to refuel so only (4x30=) 120 sec + 32.4 minute =34.4 minute will be the lap time for the first car, where as the second car will take (4x90=) 360 sec + 30 minute= 36 minute to complete the lap. As 34.4<36 , the first car will win assuming 100% efficiency in all variables that effect lap time.
