Three Runners, One Winner

Algebra Level 2

Rooney, Hernandez, and Robin race each other in a 100 meter race. All of them run at a constant speed throughout the race.

If Rooney beats Hernandez by 20 meters and Hernandez beats Robin by 20 meters, then by how many meters does Rooney beat Robin?

Rooney ran 100m in the time that it took Hernandez to run 80. So, Rooney's speed is 5 4 \frac{5}{4} of Hernandez's. Hernandez ran 100m in the time that it took Robin to run 80. So, Hernandez's speed is 5 4 \frac{5}{4} of Robin's. Rooney's speed is 5 4 \frac{5}{4} * 5 4 \frac{5}{4} = 25 16 \frac{25}{16} of Robin's speed. Multiply the numerator and denominator of the fraction by 4, and you get 100 64 \frac{100}{64} , meaning that Rooney ran 100m(finishing the race) in the time that it took Robin to run 64, beating him by 100-64 = 36 meters.

When person A is at 100m Person B is at 80m Since this is constant velocity, Person B will always be at 80% of person A. Person C will also always be 80% of person B, since 80% of 80% is 64%, then person C will always be at 64% of person A. Therefore, when person A is at 100m Person C will be at 64m. So person A beats person C by 36m.

100/v1 = 80/v2 100/v2 = 80/v3

20+(20/v2)*v3=20+16 = 36

You can solve this by numbers! Rooney=20 m/s so 100m in 5 secend. H= (100-20)m/5s = 16m/s & 100m in 100/16 secend. Robin= (100-20)m/100/16s=16×80/100 m/s & in 5 secend 16×80×5/100 = 64 m. So Rooney-Robin= 100-64= 36m .I dont know why (20+20)-(2×2)=36 solve like % !

I liked ratio of distance travelled, which must stay constant if they all travel at constant speed.

so ?=64
