As shown in diagram, when you overtake the one in the second place, you replace him. Same theory applies to similar "overtaking" problems.

If you overtake the second place you become 2nd because you cant be first

because

YOU NEVER OVERTOOK THE PERSON IN THE FIRST POSITION

If you are in third place and overtake second, you will become second.
