The statement "You are ninth in the queue from either end" implies that there are 8 people before me and there are also 8 people after me.

This means that excluding me, there will be 16 people in the queue. Hence, the total number of people in the queue (including me) is 16 + 1 = 17 16 + 1 = 17 .

Center point of a line is

x 1 + x 2 2 \frac{x_{1}+x_{2}}{2}

We know

( 1 ) + x 2 2 = 9 \frac{(1)+x_{2}}{2}=9

since the line starts from person 1.

And we get

x 2 = 17 x_{2}=\boxed{17}

Given: you are in the ninth position

So, 8 people are before you and after you. Thus, 8+8+1=17 is the answer.

very concise, nice! 🤗

Couldn't the answer actually need any number? All the question states is that you are nine from the END, the beginning of the queue is not mentioned so, for all we know, there could be 20 people ahead.

The only relevant piece of information is that you are ninth from the END.

Yes, but it's actually ninth from either end, so you are in the ninth position from first and from the last.

You'll be in the middle of the queue only when the no. of people in the queue is odd. In that case if there are 'N' no. of people at the front and at the back, then the total no. of people in the queue will be '2N-1'.

Correction: 2n+1

n ins't no. of people ahead or behind you but it is your position like in this case 9th. so we put 9 and not 8.

hence,

for your position,(9th in this case) it is 2n-1

but for no. of people behind or ahead you, it is 2n+1

There are 8 people infront of you which makes you the ninth and there are 8 people behind you which makes you ninth counting the other way. Therefore, people in the queue is 8 infront of you + 8 behind you and YOU :D. 8+8+1=17

9+9=18, because I am number 9 from both begining to end and end to begining;

18-1=17, because I counted me twice with the last count.

1 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 me 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 1

Let you are in x t h x^{th} in the queue. If x is ninth from either end, that should be there are 8 people in front side and 8 people in back side. Thus, the number of people in the queue is 8+1+8 = 17

This guy is in the seventh place from either side this means if he is the 7th from Right it is okay and if he is the 7th from the left it'll be okay.

The other people if you count adds up 8, eight from the other side and from the opposing side counts 8+8 And it Equals up 16

Last equation; You are 1 they are 16 Then we would add them up which is 17 therefore there are 17 people in the queue.

Thank U
