Ratio

Algebra Level 1

The ratio of the sum and difference of 2 numbers is x. Find the ratio of the 2 numbers.

x + 1 x \frac { x+1 }{ x } x + 1 x 1 \frac { x+1 }{ x-1 } 2 x 2x x x 1 \frac { x}{x-1}

L e t t h e n u m b e r s b e m a n d n . x = m + n m n x m x n = m + n m ( x 1 ) = n ( x + 1 ) m n = x + 1 x 1 Let\quad the\quad numbers\quad be\quad m\quad and\quad n.\\ \\ \Rightarrow \quad x=\frac { m+n }{ m-n } \\ \Rightarrow \quad xm-xn=m+n\\ \Rightarrow \quad m(x-1)=n(x+1)\\ \Rightarrow \quad \frac { m }{ n } =\boxed { \frac { x+1 }{ x-1 } }

x 1 = m + n m n \dfrac{x}{1} = \dfrac{m+n}{m-n}
Add on both sides of the equation, the denominators to the numerators, and subtract the numerators from denominators. We get ( x + 1 ) / ( 1 x ) = 2 m / 2 n . . . . . . . m n = x + 1 x 1 ( x+1)/(1-x)=2m/-2n.......\implies \frac{m}{n} =\dfrac{x+1}{x-1}

This is the Dividendo-Componendo Method of Ratios.
