Organic Chemistry Divergent-Convergent reaction of 2-butanol

Chemistry Level 3

A solution of 2-butanol \text{2-butanol} was split into two flasks labeled A A and B B . A mixture of phosphorus \text{phosphorus} and bromine \text{bromine} was added to flask A A ; to flask B B aqueous hydroxide \text{hydroxide} was poured in. The contents of flask B B were then transferred to flask A A . A product resulted from the mixture.

Input your answer as the number of hydrogen \text{hydrogen} divided by the number of carbons \text{carbons} in the final product, to two decimal places: Answer = Number of Hydrogens product Number of Carbons product . \text{Answer }= \frac{\text{Number of Hydrogens}_{\text{ product}}}{\text{Number of Carbons}_{\text{ product}}}.

Hint: The reaction is S N 2 S_N2 , not E 2 E2 .

In flask A A , phosphorus tribromide \text{phosphorus tribromide} substituted the alcohol \text{alcohol} for a bromide \text{bromide} , forming 2-bromo butane \text{2-bromo butane}

Flask B B contained 2-butoxide \text{2-butoxide} from the removal of the alcoholic hydrogen \text{alcoholic hydrogen} with hydroxide \text{hydroxide} .

The mixing of flasks A A and B B forms an ether through a Williamson Ether Synthesis \text{Williamson Ether Synthesis} . The product is (2-butoxy)-2-butane \text{(2-butoxy)-2-butane} , which contains 18 hydrogen 18 \text{ hydrogen} and 8 carbons 8 \text{ carbons} .

A n s w e r = 18 H 8 C = 2.25 Answer = \frac{18 \text{ H}}{8 \text{ C}} = \boxed{2.25}
