While solving this problem, I have found an interesting way to tackle it

Take the reference point at G. For movements left to G will be negative and any movement right to G will be positive. Starting with the condition which involves G we can proceed as follows:

"four to the left of the letter G" $= -4$

"immediately to the left..." $-1$

"three to the right ..."= $3$

Adding $-4-1+3= 3-5=-2$ . Therefore, the required letter is $-2$ units from the reference letter (i.e., G). Or $2$ units left to G (as per the 'sign convention' used). Here $G$ is assigned the position $0$ .

Note: If the problem's statement is simple (without any much twists). Then, as a rule of thumb, simply add the left movements to get a sum $L$ and attach a negative sign to the numeric value obtained. Add right movements to get a sum $R$ , let it be positive. Find $R+L=U$ . The required letter is then $U$ units from the reference point (you have to choose a reference point, pray that it be mentioned in the question. e.g., $G$ in this problem). If the sign of $U$ is negative then the sought letter lies left of the reference chosen otherwise (if $U$ is positive) the sought letter lies right to the reference point.

You must try this on examples where the no. of quantities is more than 8. Try this using this method.
