Red marbles vs blue marbles!

Algebra Level 2

Karl bought x x bags of red marbles for y y dollars per bag, and z z bags of blue marbles for 3 y 3y dollars per bag. If he bought twice as many bags of blue marbles as red marbles, then in terms of y y , what was the average cost, in dollars, per bag of marbles?

3 y 2 \frac{3y}{2} 6 y 6y 3 y y 3y - y 2 y 2y 7 y 3 \frac{7y}{3}

Ignore z z and replace it with 2 x 2x .

Total money spent on red bags = x y = x y = x \cdot y = xy .

Total money spent on blue bags = 2 x 3 y = 6 x y = 2x \cdot 3y = 6xy .

Total money spent = x y + 6 x y = 7 x y = xy + 6xy = 7xy .

Total number of bags = x + 2 x = 3 x = x + 2x = 3x

Average cost = 7 x y 3 x = 7 y 3 = \dfrac{7xy}{3x} = \boxed{\dfrac{7y}{3}}
