Redbull

Algebra Level 3

A Redbull can with total volume of 330 mL has height 12 cm and radius 2.82 cm. A promotion gives 20% more volume for free! What is the new radius of the can if the height remains the same as the original?

Hint: Only one calculation need be performed.

The answer is 3.09.

1 solution

Since volume of the can is directly proportional to the square of the radius or V r 2 V \propto r^2 , then

V 2 V 1 = r 2 2 r 1 2 1.2 V 1 V 1 = r 2 2 2.8 2 2 r 2 = 1.2 × 2.82 3.09 \begin{aligned} \frac {V_2}{V_1} & = \frac {r_2^2}{r_1^2} \\ \frac {1.2V_1}{V_1} & = \frac {r_2^2}{2.82^2} \\ \implies r_2 & = \sqrt{1.2}\times 2.82 \\ & \approx \boxed{3.09}\end{aligned}

Thumbs up 👍
