For r = cos k θ r = \cos k\theta , the number of regions bounded n = { k if k is odd. 3 k if k is even. n = \begin{cases} k & \text{if }k \text{ is odd.} \\ 3k & \text{if }k \text{ is even.} \end{cases} . Therefore, for k = 4 k=4 , n = 8 n=\boxed 8 .
