Chemistry Level 3

Ethanoic Acid Reacts with NaOH to give a salt(A).

When Salt (A) Is electrolysed it gives a gas (B) Containing all carbon

carbon single bonds. When Compound (B) Undergoes free radical

monochlorination it gives compound (C). When Compound is Heated

With Alcoholic KOH It gives an unsaturated compound (D). When

Compound (D) Is treated Bromine gas in presence of Tetra chloro

methane gives an alkyl halide (E). When This Compound Is Treated

With Alcoholic KOH Followed By reaction with Sodamide It gives a

gas (F) .

How Many of the following statements are correct?

  1. Salt(A) Is Basic due to salt hydrolysis in aqueous phase.

  2. We could have also prepared (B) From Reacting Salt (A) With Soda lime followed by monochlorination and then reacting it with sodium and dry ether.

3.(E) Is a geminal dihalide.

4.Gas (F) Is used in welding arcs

5.Gas (F) Cannot React With Grignard Reagent.

6 . Hydrolysis Of Calcium Carbide Produces Gas (F) As A Biproduct

7 . (D) Is more acidic than (F)

8 . (D) Can Show Geometrical Isomerism

9 . If (D) Is reacted with HBr once in the presence of organic

peroxide and then not in the presence of organic peroxide we will get

different products.

10.When (B) Is reacted With Oxygen gas in the presence of

Manganese(II) Acetate the solution turns alkaline.

1 solution

Firstly This Is Not my solution. all credit goes to @aryan goyat for writing this wonderful and absolutely correct solution because of some reason he is not able to post the solution hence i am posting on his behalf .

Only i have added explanation to statements 5 and 10 from myself all other work is done by him

statement 1- is correct as it is strong base weak acid salt. statement 2 -is correct as soda lime lead to decarboxylation and sodium and dry ether is wurtz reaction.

statement 3- is incorrect as it is vicinal dihalide.

statement 4 -is correct as F is acetylene and is well known for welding application.

statement 5-is incorrect . Grignard Reagent (RMgX) Where R is an alkyl or phenyl group and X is an halogen(normally chlorine and bromine) is a widely used reagent in organic chemistry. As magnesium is an electropositive element carrying a positve 2 charge hence R Group must also carry a unit negative charge that means that in RMgX Carbon has carbanion character (which is a very strong base) . Basicity decreases along a period as electronegativity increases so tendency to loose electrons decreases. Hence it can abstract slightly acidic hydrogen also (like from terminal alkynes) . Hence it can take H+ from Nitrogen, alkyne,Thioalcohol and carboxylic acid and will form methane. (A similar reaction is corey house synthesis also albeit it uses organo lithium compounds). So R- Will Take H From sp hybridised carbon to form alkane.

statement 6- is correct it is a well known method of preparation of acetylene at laboratory as well as industrial scale.

statement 7- is incorrect as acetylene is more acidic than ethene because if we loose 1 H(+) carboanion formed is more stable in that case (sp hybridized is more electronegetive carbon)

statement 8- is incorrect ethene can not show geometrical isomers all group attached is same.

statement 9- is incorrect a if H+ attacking on any carbon product is same .

statement 10-is incorrect As ethane will get oxidised to acetic acid.
