x = 0.999... 10 x = 9.999... 10 x − x = 9.999... − 0.999... x=0.999...\\ 10x=9.999...\\ 10x-x=9.999...\quad -\quad 0.999...

Since . 999.... .999.... gets cancelled, we now have:

9 x = 9 x = 1 9x=9\\ x=1
