Ring Dynamics

Classical Mechanics Level pending

A ring of radius r r and a small ball of the same mass are placed on a frictionless horizontal floor. The ball is at a distance 0.5 r 0.5r from centre of the ring. Now both of them are given opposite velocities of equal moduli in directions perpendicular to the line joining the centre C C of the ring and location B B of the ball. All the collisions betwe~n them are perfectly elastic.

Find the minimum and maximum separations between them during process of their motion.

Answer comes in the form of α r \alpha r and β r \beta r
Type your answer as α + β = ? \alpha+\beta=?

The answer is 1.5.
