Roots to a Solution

Algebra Level 2

If f ( x ) = x 3 + 2 x 2 6 x + 7 f(x) = x^3 + 2x^2 - 6x + 7 , what is the sum of all a 2 a^2 for which f ( a ) = 0 f(a)=0 ?

The answer is 16.

Let the roots of f ( x ) f(x) be a a , b b , and c c .

By Vieta's Formulas -

c y c a = 2 \sum_{cyc}^{} a = -2

c y c a b = 6 \sum_{cyc}^{} ab = -6

and a b c = 7 abc = -7

c y c a 2 = ( c y c a ) 2 2 c y c a b \sum_{cyc}^{} a^2 = (\sum_{cyc} a)^2 - 2 * \sum_{cyc} ab

= 4 2 6 = 4 - 2* - 6

= 16 = 16
