Running Race Part2

Logic Level 1

4 competitors, Alice, Bob, Carl, and Daniel, finished a 10k race with no ties. We have the following clues:

  1. Alice did not finished next to Bob.
  2. Daniel did not finish next to Carl.
  3. Alice beat Carl and Bob lost to Daniel.
  4. Daniel was faster than Alice.

What was the order in which they finished? Use capital letters, from left to right with the first letter of their names, to represent 4th, 3rd, 2nd and 1st place. For example, if Alice won 1st, Bob 2nd, Carl 3rd and Daniel 4th, then the representation would be DCBA

Look at the options. We know that A can't be next to B and C can't be next to D. Only 1 of the options satisfy this: BCAD.

Let's use spaces _ _ _ _ to represent each place they runners ended up with. Since Alice beat Carl, she wasn't last. Since Bob lost to Daniel, he wasn't first. Then we have two possibilities (along with the fact that they're not next to each other): (1 )_ B _ A or (2) B _ A _ But Daniel was faster than Alice (1) is not an option. Then it has to be (2). Now, Carl lost to Alice, so the final configuration is BCAD.
