On the one hand, if a is the salary Ashwani earns, then his father earns 2a.

On the other hand, the difference of their salary is USD 3500:

2 a − a = 3500 2a - a = 3500

a = 3500 a = \boxed {3500}

Therefore, Ashwani earns USD 3500.
