A triangle has 180 degrees. Therefore, angle A in triangle ABC can be represented so: 180-B-C. This would be perfect, except we don't have an angle C! Alternate exterior angles are congruent. Angle C and the unknown angle in the triangle are alternate each other and on the exterior of the two transversals, so the unknown angle is equal to C. So to find angle A, we must simply subtract B and C from 180 and get 180-b-c.
