A rope swing hangs vertically down so that the end is 12 inches from the ground, and 48 inches from the tree.

If the swing is pulled across so that it touches the tree, it is 20 inches from the ground.

How long is the rope?

Let, the length of the rope is X. Then, if we draw a parallel line to the ground from the point it touches the tree and the line intersects the vertical line at any point. Thus, we get a right-angled triangle of which, The Hypotenuse is X, The Base is 48 & The length of the Perpendicular is (X+12-20)=(X-8). So, by using Pythagorean Theorem, we can easily write that, (X^2) = ((X-8)^2) + (48^2). And, after doing a little calculation, we find, X=148 which is the answer.
