On the other hand, if each of them paid $16, they would have $6 more than they needed. How much should each of the classmates contribute so they collect the exact amount needed for the trip?

Let the number of classmates be N.

If each of them paid $14, then they would be $4 short to pay for the trip

-> Cost of the trip = $(14N + 4)

If each of them paid $16, they would have $6 more than they needed

-> Cost of the trip = $(16N - 6)

Put these equal

-> 14N + 4 = 16N - 6

-> 4 + 6 = 16N - 14N

-> 2N = 10

-> N = 5

So there are 5 classmates and the cost of the trip = $74

Therefore they should each pay $74 ÷ 5 = $14.80
