Scientific Notation 2

Algebra Level 2

Solve the following equation and answer in scientific notation:

X = [ ( 1 × 1 0 10 ) × ( 6.5 × 1 0 2 ) ] ÷ [ 8.4 × 1 0 14 ] . X = \left[\left(1\times10^{-10}\right)\times\left(6.5\times10^{-2}\right)\right]\div\left[8.4\times10^{-14}\right].

0.77 × 1 0 2 0.77\times 10^2 7.7 × 1 0 1 7.7\times 10^1 77 77 0.77 × 1 0 2 0.77\times 10^{-2}

Remove parentheses and rearrange terms in the numerator and denominator: [ 1 6.5 1 0 2 1 0 10 ] ÷ [ 8.4 1 0 14 ] [1*6.5*10^{-2}*10^{-10}]\div[8.4*10^{-14}]

Apply the exponent rule for multiplication: [ 6.5 1 0 12 ] ÷ [ 8.4 1 0 14 ] [6.5*10^{-12}]\div[8.4*10^{-14}]

Apply the exponent rule for division: [ 6.5 1 0 2 ] ÷ [ 8.4 ] [6.5*10^{2}]\div[8.4]

Divide: 6.5 ÷ 8.4 = 0.77 6.5\div8.4=0.77 , so now we have 0.77 1 0 2 0.77*10^{2}

Put into standard format with one numeral before the decimal point: 7.7 1 0 1 7.7*10^1

You don't actually need to work out the answer for this question. Answer B ( 7.7 × 1 0 1 7.7\times10^1 ) is the only answer that is in correct scientific notation.
