Screw Gauge

The pitch of a screw gauge is 0.5mm and there are fifty divisions on the circular scale. In measuring the thickness of a metal plate, there are five divisions on the pitch scale and thirty first division coincides with the reference line. What is the thickness of the plate?

2.63 mm 2.81 mm 1.97 mm 1.82 mm

Apply your formula, or your general knowledge.

Pitch,p =0.5mm

Division of circular scale, d=50

Least count, c = p d c=\frac{p}{d}

For the metal,

Pitch scale division, p d = 5 p_d=5

Pitch scale reading, p r = p × p d p_r=p \times p_d

Circular scale coincide division, c d = 31 c_d=31

Circular scale reading, c r = c × c d c_r=c\times c_d

So, total reading =thickness = ( p × p d ) + ( c × c d ) =(p\times p_d)+(c\times c_d) = ( . 5 × 5 ) + ( . 5 50 × 31 ) m m =(.5\times5)+(\frac{.5}{50}\times 31)mm = 2.81 m m =\boxed{2.81mm}
