Two ships A and B are 10 km apart on a line running south to north. Ship A is streaming west at 20 km/hr and ship B is streaming north at 20 km/hr. What is there distance of closest approach and how long do they take to reach it?

See the answer can be found simply. I am not giving full answer for some thrill. But these are some needed hints: assume a body to be at rest and find the relative velocity of second one with respect to it . The relative direction of velocity of A with respect to B comes out to be North-east . Now form a line along this direction passing through A and find the minimum distance (perpendicular)between this line and B. If minimum distance(7.07) is found we can easily find time to be 15 min.

@Adarsh Adi For finding the exact time, you should state that 7.07 is the approximate distance since the accurate distance is sq. root of 50....
