n n could take any value of the form 4 k 1 4k - 1 , where k k is any integer.

How is this not -1?

Well, it can be -1, but it can also be 3, or 7, or 11, or any number of the form I have stated above. Since it was not stated in the question whether n n has to be the smallest positive or negative integer or whatsoever, we cannot directly determine what the value of n n is.
