Marvin sold three times as much apples in the morning than in the afternoon. If he sold 120 apples that day, how many apples did he sell in the morning?

The answer is 90.

If the number of apples sold in the afternoon is x \color{#D61F06}{x} , then apples sold in the morning are 3 x \color{#D61F06}{3x}

Total Apples sold = 3 x + x 120 = 4 x 30 = x 3 x = 90 \begin{aligned} \text{Total Apples sold } &= \color{#D61F06}{3x + x} \\ 120 &= \color{#D61F06}{4x} \\ 30 &= \color{#D61F06}{x} \\ \\ \therefore 3x &= \boxed{90} \end{aligned}
