Shall we concoct some Wolfsbane potion?

Chemistry Level 2

Consider the following statements:

\rightarrow N a C l NaCl is soluble in water because it is an ionic compound.

\rightarrow H 2 S O 4 H_2SO_4 and H N O 3 HNO_3 are soluble in water though they are covalent because they form Hydrogen Bonds with water molecules.

\rightarrow S O 2 SO_2 is soluble in water though it is covalent and doesn't form form Hydrogen Bonds with water but because of the fact that it reacts with water.

\rightarrow C C l 4 CCl_4 and C H 4 CH_4 are insoluble in water because they are purely covalent compound, and they do not make Hydrogen Bonds with water molecules.

Now, the concepts deduced are:-

\rightarrow If a compound is ionic then it is soluble in water .

\rightarrow If a covalent compound forms Hydrogen Bonds with water , then it is soluble.

\rightarrow If any compound reacts with one another, then they are said to be soluble in each other.

\rightarrow Pure Hydrocarbons are insoluble in water .

What is the reason for solubility of H C l HCl in water ?

It forms Hydrogen bonds with water molecules It is an ionic compound, so it dissociates and hence is soluble in water It is a Hydrocarbon None of these It reacts with water.
