Let x = 12 x = 12 and y = 13 y = 13 .

1 2 2 − 2 × 12 × 13 + 1 3 2 12^2 - 2 \times 12 \times 13 + 13^2

= x 2 − 2 x y + y 2 = x^2 - 2xy + y^2

= ( x − y ) 2 = (x - y)^2

= ( − 1 ) 2 = (- 1)^2

= 1 = 1
