Mr. A has x children by his first wife and Mrs. B has x +1 children by her first husband. Later they both marry each other and have their own as well as the other children by their first marriage. The family afterwards has 10 children in all. Find the maximum number of fights among the children, assuming that children of same parent don't fight with each other.

Solve as x=3, so total fights are 33.

Can you provide more details as to why x = 3?

If x is any other integer then number of fights would not be maximum

Because when x is greater or lesser than 3, it will not satisfy the conditions. It is just kind of assumption, I guess. Is there any thing kind of formulae to solve it?

Right, so there are several ways you can do this.

1) Show explicity the number of fights for x = 0 , 1, 2, 3, 4. Show that x = 3 is the maximum

2) Come up with an algebraic expression, which shows that x = 3 is indeed the maximum.
