As of 11 February, Norway was leading the 2014 Winter Olympics with 11 medals.

If they had 4 gold medals, how many different possibilities are there for the number of silver medals they might have had?

There are 7 7 medals ( 11 4 11 - 4 ) that could have been bronze or silver.

Thus, Norway could have won 0 , 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 , 5 , 6 0,1,2,3,4,5,6 or 7 7 medals. That means there are 8 \boxed{8} different possibilities.

Ugh, I missed the fact that there wasn't necessarily a silver medal. I rushed that too much.

The number of silver medals can be any number between 0 and 7 as 7+4=11 (the total tally).

( Bronze medalls will fill up the remaining places so as to make the total 11 even when 7 silver medals are not won )

So number of possibilities = 8 \boxed{8} .

First we must determine how many Silver or Bronze medals Norway has. We do this by subtracting the 4 gold medals they won from their total medal count of 11. This shows us that they have won 7 Silver or Bronze medals. We can then see that Silver medals could have a value between 0-7 and this shows that there are 8 possibilities of the Silver medal count. Notes: "0" is counted as a possibility because it is possible that no Silver medals were won and that all 7 medals were Bronze.

if there are 4 gold medals that means that there are 7 more medals either silver or bronze so there could be : 0 bronze 7 silver, 1 bronze 6 silver, 2 bronze 5 silver, 3 bronze 4 silver, 4 bronze 3 silver, 5 bronze 2 silver, 6 bronze 1 silver, and 7 bronze and 0 silver (don't forget that there could be 0 silvers)
when you count them it equals 8

There could be any number of silver medals from 0 through 7, bringing the count of possibilities at 8.

Total no. of medals =11

No. of gold medals = 4

Remaining medals = 7

Suppose :- 1) All 7 medals are silver. 2) Not at all 7 medals are silver , they all are bronze.

So, first there are 7 possibilities that all medals are silver and 1 possibility that there is no 1 silver medal they had , all are bronze.

So total no. of possibilities = 7+1=8

There are 4 gold medals, so 7 medals are either bronze, silver or both. You can easily count it just by counting down from 7 - 7 medals, 6 medals, 5 medals, 4 medals, 3 medals, 2 medals, one medal, and 0 medals. Therefore there are 8 possibilities.

as there are 3 types of medals Gold Silver & Bronze and we already know that they are with 4 Gold out of 11 medals they won and the remaining medals unknown can be in this form with 8 ways ( 0 S-8 B , 1 S=7 B , 2 S-6 B , 3 S-5B , 4 S-4 B , 5 S-3 B , 6 S-2 B , 7 S-1 B , 8 S- 0 B ) ,so the answer is 8 ways

So the other seven medals can be either silver or bronze. Thus they have all the possibilities of getting silver medals from 0 to 7. So there are totally 8 different possibilities of number of silver medals

n - number of medals available (7 = 11-4) r - number of of ways it can be won (2 = either silver or bronze) we can do an analogy of this problem to a more common probability related question, in how many ways can 'n' items be distributed into 'r' container and each container may have zero or more items. The answer is: n+r-1C r-1 : 7+2-1 C 2-1 = 8

You either have no silver and 7 bronze (since we only have 11 - 4 medals) or 1 silver and 6 bronzes or 2 silvers and 5 bronzes or 3 silvers and 4 bronzes or 4 silvers and 3 bronzes or 5 silvers and 2 bronzes or 6 silvers and 1 bronze or 7 silvers and 0 bronze. All in all we have 8 different possibilities.

Norway was leading with 11 11 medals out of which there are 4 4 gold medals. So, there are ( 11 4 ) = 7 (11-4)=7 bronze or silver medals. Now, out of these medals, there are 8 8 possibilities of getting silver medals. They can have 0 0 to 7 7 silver medals out of the 7 7 remaining medals. Thus, we have a total of 8 possibilites on the number of silver medals that they might have had.

So, the answer is = 8 =\boxed{8}
