( a + b ) 2 = ( a 2 + b 2 ) + 2 ( a b ) = 8 + 2 × 2 = 12 (a + b)^2 = (a^2 + b^2) + 2(ab) = 8 + 2 × 2 = \boxed {12}

As an aside, a , b a,b are complex numbers here.
