Calculating the cost!!

A toaster runs on voltage 250 V 250 V and current 1 A 1 A .Toaster is used for 30 days, daily for 30 minutes. An electric heater is operated on voltage 300 V 300 V and current 1.5 A 1.5 A . The heater is used for 30 days daily for 50 minutes. Rate of electrical energy is 4 per kWh. Calculate the cost of electrical energy.

Energy in a circuit which has a device with a potential drop of V V and a current of I I passing through it for time t t , is given by

E = V I t E = VIt

For our case, this energy is contributed by two devices, i.e. a 250 V 250V , 1 A 1A toaster and a 300 V 300V , 1.5 A 1.5A heater. So, the total energy can be given by:

E = ( 250 ) ( 1 ) ( 30 ) ( 60 ) + ( 300 ) ( 1.5 ) ( 50 ) ( 60 ) = 54 × 10 6 J E = (250)(1)(30)(60) + (300)(1.5)(50)(60) = 54 \times {10}^{6} J

We know that 3.6 × 10 6 J = 1 k W h 3.6 \times {10}^{6} J = 1kWh , and so, our energy in k W h kWh is E = 54 × 10 6 3.6 × 10 6 = 15 k W h E = \dfrac {54 \times {10}^{6}} {3.6 \times {10}^{6}} = 15kWh .

So, the cost of electrical energy used is 15 × 4 = 60 = n 15 \times 4 = 60 = n and thus n 3 = 216000 {n}^{3} = 216000 .
