income = salary + tips
i = s + t ---> e q . 1
t = 4 5 s
s = 5 4 t ---> e q . 2
substitute e q . 2 in e q . 1
i = 5 4 t + t
t = 5 9 i
this is the answer that every one can understand. good
I think you mean t=5/9 i
Simply assume any value (multiple of 5 and 4 both) as salary; on simple computation, you'll get it...! Eg: 200*5/4=250; total income is 200+250=450.. so the ration is 250/450=5/9
Ds one is good
Do you understand why you can assume any value as salary?
5/4 means 1.25 times of his salary, so total salary is 2.25 ie 9 so tips is 5/9 and actual salary is 4/9
Income= Tips + Salary,,,,therefore→
I=5/4 + 1→
I=9/4
x=Tips / Income,,,,therefore→
x=(5/4 ) / (9/4)→
x=20/36
reduce...
x=5/9
let the salary be ' x ' and the tips be ' 1.25x ' . the income will then be ' 2.25x ' . By dividing the tips to the income ( 1.25x/2.25x) we get 5/9
let his salary be x then x+5/4x=1 hence 4x+5x=4 x=4/9 his tip is 5/4x=5/4*(4/9)=5/9
Hey yo,
let x= income, a = salary , b = tips,
x = a + b,
for a week => as b = 5a/4, x = a + 5a / 4 = 9a / 4 ,
b / x = ( 5a / 4 ) / ( 9a / 4 )
therefore b / x = 5 / 9 , b : x= 5 : 9,
thanks...
The tips were for only one week. Shouldnt we consider no of weeks* 1 week's tip for calculating the total income?
Let x be his salary. So 5/4 x is his tips. x+5/4x=1. Solving x, we have;
9/4x=1 x=4/9 (5/4)(4/9) would give us 5/9.
let tips be 't' ; salary be 'x' ; t = (5/4) x ; income 'i' = x +t ; i = (4/5) t + t ; adding gives i = (9/5) t implies tips 't' = (5/9)th of the income 'i' ............................................. tada........................................\ by Paul Pavish
Since the tips is 5/4 th of the salary therefore the whole income would be 5+4 = 9 , it is therefore the tips from the income would be 5/9 .
I like this solution!
By using a simple example,we can arrive at the figure 5/9.. For easyness of calculations,let his weekly wage be $100..then the money he makes from tips is 5/4*100=$125(so skilled waiters can make more from tips than his actual salary!). coming back, total income=$125+$100=$225.. fraction of income from tips is 125/225 which gives you a healthy ratio of 5/9 ;)
let x be the total income.so income of tips 5x by 4.so 5xby4 plus x=9x by 4. so fraction of income=5x by 4 dived by 9x by 4=5by9 very easy!

So he got 5/4th of his salary from tips. So the total amount he had at the end of the week would be 5/4 + 1= 9/4 times his salary. Out of this, tips constitute 5/4. So the fraction of the amount(i.e. the total income) will be (5/4)/(9/4)=5/9 [Because Part/Total]
