You can solve this problem by making everything into eighths. Peter has 6/8 of the pile, Michael has 1/8, and Sam has 1/8. By using this, you can determine that the difference between 6/8 and 1/8 (Peter and Sam) is 500. So 5/8 x =500. Michael's share of the pile was 2/8, which is 40% of 5/8. 500 × 0.40 500 \times 0.40 = 200. Therefore, 200 is the solution.

Let x be Peter's money. 1/4x is what he gave to Peter. 1/2 of 1/4 is 1/8 so Sam received 1/8 of Peter's money. The remaining money of Peter is 3/4x. That would give us 3/4x-1/8x=500, solving x would give us 800. 1/4 of 800 is 200.
