Geometry Level 2

The surface water in swimming pool forms a rectangle of length 40 m and breadth 15 m. the depth of water increases uniformly from 1.2 m at one end to 2.4 at other end. The volume of water in pool is 10k. What is k?

The answer is 108.

You can see that because it rises uniformly its a trapezoid shape. So you using (a+b)h/2 You find the cross section to be (1.2+2.4)40/2=72. Then you can find the volume by multiplying it by 15 to get 72x15=1080 10k=1080 k=108

You must do the arithmetic mean between the depths, then multiply it by 40 and by 15. The result is the volume of water. Now you just have to divide it by 10, as you can see here:

0.5 (1.2+2.4) 40*15/10=108
