First, we take an icosahedron. If we chop off the corners, we get a soccer ball. Since 5 triangles meet at a point, they form pentagons. When you chop off all three corners, you get hexagons. Thus, # of hexagons = # of triangles on an icosahedron = 20 . \# \text{of hexagons} = \# \text{of triangles on an icosahedron} = \boxed{20}.

There are 60 vertices in a icosahedron, so 60/5 = 12 pentagons. Each pentagon is connected to 5 hexagons and 3 pentagons share a hexagon. So the total number of hexagons = 12*5/3 = 20
