5 solutions

3 x + 1 = 2 x + 7 3x+1=-2x+7 (We wish to isolate x x in the left side of the equation, so we add 2 x -2x to both sides of the equation.)

3 x + 2 x + 1 = 2 x + 2 x + 7 3x+2x+1=-2x+2x+7

5 x + 1 = 7 5x+1=7 (Subtract 1 1 from both sides of the equation.)

5 x + 1 1 = 7 1 5x+1-1=7-1

5 x = 6 5x=6 (Now divide both sides of the equation by 5 5 to isolate x x )

5 x 5 = 6 5 \dfrac{5x}{5}=\dfrac{6}{5}

x = 6 5 \boxed{x=\dfrac{6}{5}}

all the steps are included; you assumed nothing and showed how you arrived at your solution. very helpful. Thanks.

Here are the steps to solve this equation for x x .

3 x + 1 = 2 x + 7 3x + 1 = -2x + 7

3 x + 1 1 = 2 x + 7 1 3x + 1 -1 = -2x + 7 - 1

3 x = 2 x + 6 3x = -2x + 6

3 x + 2 x = 2 x + 6 + 2 x 3x + 2x = -2x + 6 + 2x

5 x = 6 5x = 6

5 x 5 = 6 5 \frac{5x}{5} = \frac{6}{5}

x = 6 5 x = \frac{6}{5}

Solving gives: 3 x + 1 = 2 x + 7 3 x + 2 x = 7 1 5 x = 6 x = 6 5 \begin{aligned} 3x + 1 &= -2x + 7 \\ 3x + 2x &= 7 - 1 \\ 5x &= 6 \\ x &= \boxed{\frac{6}{5}} \end{aligned} Therefore, the answer is 6 5 \displaystyle \frac{6}{5} .
