Sound wave

Longitudinal waves, also known as "l-waves", are waves in which the displacement of the medium is in the same direction as, or the opposite direction to, the direction of travel of the wave. The above is a schematic diagram of a sound wave at a particular instant, which is a longitudinal wave. [A] and [B] are the most compressed positions and the distance between [A] and [B] is 50 50 cm. Which of the following statements is correct?

The velocity of sound is 340 340 m/s.

a) The wavelength of this sound is 1 1 m.
b) The frequency of this sound is 680 680 Hz.
c) After one period passes, position [A] becomes a rarefaction.

a) and c) c) only b) only a) only

v=s/f as v=340m/s and s=.5 m put it in equation we get f=680hz

Frequency = v λ = 340 m / s 0.5 m = 680 H z \displaystyle = \frac{v}{\lambda} = \frac{340m/s}{0.5m} = 680Hz

λ/2 is 0.5 m so freq. is 340 Hz only

why answer is not (c)

After one period it will be a compression only and after half a period it will be a rarefaction.It is like a pendulum.After 1 period it comes back to the same position/state.Likewise after one period the molecules will come closer and will be a compression.
