Speed, Time & Distance

Algebra Level 3

A cow was standing on a bridge, 5m away from the middle of the bridge. A train was coming toward the bridge from the end nearest to the cow. Seeing this the cow ran toward the train and managed to escape when the train was 2m away from the bridge. If it had run in the opposite direction(i.e. away from train), it would have been hit by the train 2m before the end of the bridge. What is the length of the bridge in meters assuming speed of train is 4 times that of the cow.

The answer is 32.

let length of bridge = 2x meters

{speed of train = St, speed of cow = Sc}

given, St = 4 * Sc

when running toward train,

time taken by cow to cover x-5 meters = (x-5) / Sc

& distance covered by train in this time, D = 4 * Sc * (x-5) / Sc

--> D = 4 * (x-5)

when running away from train,

time taken by cow to cover (5+x-2) meters = time taken by train to cover (D+2+x+x-2) meters

--> (5+x-2) / Sc = (D+2+x+x-2) / 4 * Sc

--> x = 16

i.e. length of bridge = 32 meters
