The question on simplification can be reduced to

1 2 + 17 14 − 1 5 = 2 2 + 1.2143 − 5 5 = 0.7071 + 1.2143 − 0.4472 = 1.4742 \sqrt []{\dfrac {1}{2}} + \dfrac {17}{14} - \dfrac {1}{\sqrt []{5}} \\ = \dfrac {\sqrt []{2}}{2} + 1.2143 - \dfrac {\sqrt []{5}}{5}\\ = 0.7071 + 1.2143 - 0.4472\\ =1.4742
