Squares to Rectangle

Geometry Level 2

Squares A B C D ABCD and E F G H EFGH have side lengths of a a and b b respectively.

If a rectangle I J K L IJKL has a length of a + b a + b and has the same area as the blue shaded region, then what is the width of the rectangle?

a + b a + b b b a b a - b a a

Let w w be the width of the rectangle.

( a + b ) w = a 2 b 2 (a+b)w = a^2 - b^2

( a + b ) w = ( a b ) ( a + b ) (a+b)w = (a-b)(a+b)

w = a b w = \boxed{a-b}

Very useful properties of difference of two squares .
