Let 40 n + 32 ( 12 ) 40n+32(12) be the summation of all the students at present. 40 n + 32 ( 12 ) n + 12 = ( 40 4 ) \frac { 40n+32(12) }{ n+12 } =(40-4) n = 12 \boxed{n=12}

Also, the simple fact that the new average (i.e. 36) is the midpoint of 32 and 40 should tell you that the answer is 12. :D
