It will strike 1 + 2 + 3 + . . . + 12 = T 12 = 78 1 + 2 + 3 + ... + 12 = T_{12} = 78 times in the A.M. hours, and the same number of times in the P.M. hours. So the answer is 2 × 78 = 156 2\times 78 = \boxed{156}
