x + y + z = 40 and x > y > z

x = 3y then y = x/3,

z = x – 23

x + x/3 + x – 23 = 40 solving x = 27

z = 27 – 23 = 4

x+y+z=40. x=3y and z=3y-23 then...... 3y +y + 3y-23=40. 7y-23=40. 7y=40+23. 7y=63. y=9 so....... x=27,y=9,z=4. The answer is 4.

Let length of longest piece = l cm Length of medium sized piece =l/3 cm Length of shortest piece = l - 23 cm Now,
l + l/3 + l - 23 = 40

Solving for l l=27cm Hence length of shortest piece = 27-23 = 4cm.
