Sugar

  • Fact: Coca Cola soda contains approximately 11.5% sugar.
  • If you have 212 grams (7.5 fl oz) of Coca Cola, how much sugar (in grams) would you need to add to make the Coca Cola contain 50% sugar?
  • (Assume that you have exactly 212 g of soda, and that the soda contains exactly 11.5% sugar)

The answer is 163.24.

To start, 11.5% of 212g is 24.38. Then, to find the amount of non-sugar soda, we subtract the sugar from the sugar+soda. 212 - 24.38 = 187.62. All that needs to be done now is make the total sugar content equal to the soda content. Now, to find the amount of sugar to add, we subtract the sugar from the soda because we already have 24.38 grams of sugar. 187.24 - 24.38 = 163.24. Therefore, the answer is 163.24.

On the left side of the equation we're saying "we start with 24.38 g of sugar (11.5% of 212), and we add some amount of grams of pure sugar, n"
On the right hand of the equation we're saying "we start with 212 g of soda (including the sugar), and we add some amount of grams of pure sugar, n, until the mixture reaches 50%"
Letting it do the work for us, it shows that we need to add 163.24 grams of pure sugar to get the 50% sugar solution we wanted. Bottoms up!
