Superhero Acceleration

Three superheroes are flying through the air. Superhero A is flying faster and faster. Superhero B is tired, and is slowing down. Superhero C is flying at a nice constant pace. Based on this, which of the following superheroes are accelerating? Select one or more answer choices.

Acceleration is the rate of change of velocity in a certain time \text{Acceleration is the rate of change of velocity in a certain time} . If final velocity is greater than initial velocity ( v f > v u ) (v_f > v_u) the body is said to be a c c e l e r a t i n g \color{#3D99F6}accelerating and if final velocity is less than initial velocity ( v f < v i ) (v_f < v_i) the body is said to be d e c e l e r a t i n g \color{#D61F06}decelerating .

Superhero A :

It is given that he is flying faster and faster. So, v f > v u \color{#20A900}v_f > v_u . This means he is accelerating at a constant rate \color{#3D99F6}\text{accelerating at a constant rate} .

Superhero B :

It is given that he is slowing down. So, v f < v u \color{#20A900}v_f < v_u . This means he is decelerating at a constant rate \color{#D61F06}\text{decelerating at a constant rate} .

Superhero C :

It is given that he is flying at a constant rate. So, v f = v u \color{#20A900}v_f = v_u That means his velocity is constant \color{#E81990}\text{velocity is constant} and hence acceleration is zero \color{#E81990}\text{acceleration is zero} .

Therefore, only A and C are accelerating. \color{#20A900}\text{Therefore, only A and C are accelerating.}

Did you mean to write that A and B are the ones accelerating? You correctly quote that "Acceleration is the rate of change of velocity in a certain time", but this applies to both a positive and negative change in velocity. A deceleration is just a negative acceleration, and as such, Superhero B is experiencing acceleration as he is slowing down. As for C, you said yourself that C is flying at a constant velocity meaning that his acceleration is zero. If the acceleration is zero, he is obviously not accelerating since his velocity is not changing.

Acceleration is the rate of change in velocity per unit time. Any time in which velocity changes, we say an object has accelerated. That means any time in which an object changes its speed (the magnitude of velocity) or direction, it is accelerating.

When objects are speeding up, they are changing their velocity with time. Therefore A is accelerating.

When objects are slowing down, they also experience a change in velocity and are therefore accelerating. When an object slows down, it decreases in velocity over time in the direction it is moving. Velocity is changing. Therefore, B is also accelerating.

C is not accelerating because they are not changing their velocity. They are flying at a constant speed in the same direction.

The blank provided for a person’s answer in this problem required a number. I don’t know how most people would be able to get the answer right with as A and B?
