Superheroes fighting with maths

Calculus Level 2

Electro and Spider-Man ( Spidey! ) are going to fight! This being a maths problem,we'll skip the specifics of this but we do know that both Electro and Spider-Man have a health of 500 500 units. Also, Electro can take away 50 50 units of health per second with his electro-powers.That means Spider-Man will have to defeat Electro in 10 seconds! Luckily, Spider-Man is extremely fast and he can strike Electro \infty times ( I know it's not possible, but this is calculus ) in 10 seconds but he will lose 9 10 \frac{9}{10} of his striking power every time ( in other words, every attack is 1 10 \frac{1}{10} as strong as the last and takes away only 1 10 \frac{1}{10} as many units of health ).What is the minimum initial striking power Spider-Man must have ( in units of health ) to be able to defeat Electro?

The answer is 450.

Let Spider-Man's initial striking power be x x .Every time he strikes,he has only 0.1 0.1 times the power of the last strike.So the total damage is x + 0.1 x + 0.01 x + 0.001 x . . . . = 1.11111111....... x = 10 9 x x + 0.1x + 0.01x + 0.001x.... = 1.11111111.......x = \frac{10}{9}x As the total damage must be 500 \geq 500 ,we get 500 10 9 x 500 \leq \frac{10}{9}x Then,we multiply both sides by 9 to get 4500 10 x 4500 \leq 10x Finally, divide by 10 to get 450 x 450 \leq x So,our answer is 450 \boxed{450} .

It should be 10 9 x 500 \dfrac{10}{9}x \geq 500
