Call no. of candles "x". First blow takes out a third of the candles leaving 2 3 x \frac{2}{3}x She then blows out a third of the remaining candles 2 3 x × 1 3 = 2 x 9 \frac{2}{3}x \times \frac{1}{3}=\frac{2x}{9} Total number blown out is ( 1 3 + 2 9 ) x = 5 9 x ( \frac{1}{3} + \frac{2}{9} ) x = \frac{5}{9}x So remaining candles not blown out is 4 9 x = 8 x = 18 \frac{4}{9}x=8 \Rightarrow \boxed{x=18}

Let there be C no. of candles.

When she blows the 1st time, candles left: C - 1/3C = 2/3C

After 2nd blow, candles left: 4/9C = 8

Solving, C = 18

After 2nd blow, candles left: 4/9C = 8 to put details...

2/3C - (1/3)*2/3C = 4/9C = 8 .
